ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The 1997 Canadian Encyclopedia Plus
Note: Further information on known problems and their possible solutions,
answers to commonly asked questions, and technical assistance is
available on the TCE+ Web site, at http://www.tceplus.com or
http://tceplus.com.
Installation Instructions
-------------------------
To begin the installation process, run SETUP.EXE from the CD-ROM.
It is highly recommended that you exit all applications before
installing The Canadian Encyclopedia Plus. Other programs and
drivers might interfere with the installation and calibration
processes. If problems persist, try restarting Windows and
running Setup again.
Disk Compression
----------------
If you are using a disk compression utility, the available
hard disk space reported to you might not be accurate.
Disk compression utilities can only estimate available hard
disk space.
If the installation process is not successful, you might
need to free additional hard disk space.
QuickTime for Windows Installation Problems
-------------------------------------------
There are several known problems you may run into while installing
QuickTime for Windows.
╗ Software applications install QuickTime for Windows differently.
The installation might fail if you are installing over a previous version
of QuickTime for Windows, or if you have played a QuickTime movie
in the current Windows session. Restart Windows and try running
Setup again.
╗ In some cases explicit uninstall of older versions of QuickTime
may be required to "clean-up" your system before the installation
of the newer version. (In the QuickTime group there should be both
a re-install and uninstall program and in some cases, the old version
of QuickTime must actually be re-installed before uninstall can work).
╗ If you have tried to Calibrate QuickTime several times and continue
to receive General Protection Faults, try installing the Encyclopedia
and skipping the Calibration step. Calibration is optional, and
the Encyclopedia will work without it.
Further information on installing QuickTime for Windows, and information
on how to optimize video performance on your computer, can be found
in the Readme file for QuickTime, called READ_QTW.WRI (for Windows 3.x) or
READQT32.WRI (for Windows 95 and Windows NT). Also, see the section on
slow response and poor video quality below.
For users of Large Fonts
------------------------
If you are using Windows 3.1x, Windows 95 or Windows NT with Large Fonts,
some screen text may get cut off, especially in the Quiz section of the
program. To fix this problem, simply change your Windows setup to use
Small Fonts.
In Windows 95 and Windows NT, go to the Start menu and choose Settings,
Control Panel, Display, Settings, Font Size.
In Windows 3.1x, choose Windows Setup from the Main program group,
choose Change System Settings from the Options menu, and pick Display Type.
On-the-fly Desktop Resizing in Windows 95
----------------------------------------------------
If you are using an ATI video card with Windows 95, you may experience
display problems if you try to resize your desktop while the Encyclopedia
is running. Simply close the Encyclopedia and re-start it to correct the
difficulty.
Uninstalling the Encyclopedia
-----------------------------
You can uninstall The Canadian Encyclopedia Plus in Windows 3.1x by
double-clicking on the Uninstall icon in the Program Manager group
for The Canadian Encyclopedia Plus. In Window 95, go to the Start
menu and choose Settings, Control Panel, then double-click on Add/Remove
Programs.
If you are using Windows 95, and have just uninstalled the Encyclopedia you
must restart Windows before attempting to reinstall the Encyclopedia.
"General Protection Faults" and "Application Errors"
----------------------------------------------------
These types of errors are frequently due to video driver
incompatibility or incompatibilities with other drivers in
your system. One of the following suggestions might solve the
problem:
╗ Make sure your system meets the minimum requirements listed
on the package.
╗ Change the number of colours and/or resolution of your monitor.
If possible, use the standard Windows Super VGA driver.
Then run the program again.
The Canadian Encyclopedia Plus has been successfully tested on a
wide variety of hardware and peripheral equipment. Microsoft Windows
is a device-independent operating system. This program is not
designed for compatibility with any specific hardware item. Problems
with sound cards, video displays and printers are most often the
result of problems with device drivers supplied by the manufacturers.
Disk Full Errors
----------------
╗ If you encounter these errors while installing The Canadian
Encyclopedia Plus, try deleting unnecessary files on your hard
disk to increase available disk space.
"Read Errors" and long delays
-----------------------------
╗ Defective CD-ROM discs are very rare. Make sure your disc is
clean and free of scratches and fingerprints if you experience
problems like "Can't Read from Drive" or long delays.
Slow Response and poor video quality
------------------------------------
The program response and video quality will vary depending on the
speed of your processor, CD-ROM drive, and the amount of available
RAM.
For Windows 95 and Windows NT users, some computers (including IBM Thinkpads
with the MWave sound system) have been known to cause problems with
QuickTime auto-calibration. If you experience choppy, out-of-sync video and
sound, or if the audio track of movies come through as clicks and screeches,
try the following (note that these steps must be followed EXACTLY, in order
for the changes to take effect):
Exit all running programs, including the Encyclopedia.
Go into the Control Panel and double-click on the QuickTime 32 applet.
Click the More button, then choose the Audio tab.
Insure that the Automatic Rate Adjustment checkbox is checked.
Click on "Close" and "Yes" to apply your changes.
Run the calibration movie again, by (in Windows 95) choosing Run... from
the Start menu and typing:
play32 sample.mov
or, in Windows NT, choosing Run from the Program Manager File menu and
type:
play32 sample.mov
Hit the spacebar to start the calibration movie.
When the movie has finished, close the Movie Player.
Start the QuickTime 32 Control Panel applet again, and click More, then
Audio.
Now, UN-check the Automatic Rate Adjustment checkbox.
Click on "Close" and "Yes" to apply your changes.
For Windows 3.x users, some steps which may improve the video
playback include:
╗ We recommend that users running MS-DOS 6.0 or greater use the
SMARTDRIVE disk caching utility. Set the cache size for Windows
at 512K bytes or smaller.
╗ We recommend that you use the /X switch to disable write-back
caching, as this can interfere with smooth data transfer from
your CD-ROM drive.
╗ We also recommend you disable CD-ROM caching by using the /U
switch.
See your DOS manual or on-line DOS help for detailed instructions
on making these changes (type HELP SMARTDRV at the DOS prompt).
